Its been 2 months since Hurricane Maria made landfall in Puerto Rico and the effects have been devastating. Many people have lost their homes, livelihood, and even their lives. We have all been shaken to our cores and are commitment to help Puerto Rico rebuild and recover has only become stronger. Like many Boricuas in the diaspora a few of us held a fundraiser last night and Javier LopezLa Marqueta RetoñaVive Borikén - Puerto Rico and I, Melissa Montero would like to thank everyone for coming to Puerto Rico Fundraiser: The Diaspora Responds in La Fonda Boricua. We were able to raise over $6,500. Proceeds will be given to three organizations on the island: ISER Caribe, La Brigrada Solidaria del Oeste and Casa Pueblo. 
 

We would like to thank La Fonda Boricua for having us. The food was great and so was the service. Thank you to all of the volunteers: Maricruz BadiaRafael PabonGisela González, and Gaba Ramirez for your hard work on making sure things ran smoothly. Thank you to the Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito for your remarks and providing guests with further information on the situation of Puerto Rico. Thank you to the Caridad De La Luz aka La Bruja for your captivating performance. Guests were touched and moved by your words. Thank you to the DJs: Suce McGoose and Rafael Flexman. The music set the tone and provided a great atmosphere. Thank you to Justin Maldonado for providing the DJ equipment and tech support. Thank you Marlon Bizzy Beefor providing equipment as well. We could not have done any of this without you all. It takes a village and even if it takes decades, we will rebuild Puerto Rico much stronger than it ever was. Our island and people need us now more than ever. And we are thankful to you all for your contributions. Puerto Rico siempre de pie!

ISER Caribe- Non-profit organization of socio-economic and environmental character based in the south west of Puerto Rico. Through their educational efforts and collaborative projects that empower communities and promote self-reliance. They have directed coastal conservation projects, created of rain gardens, community gardens, agroecological agriculture, conserve fish resources and protection of reefs in different islands of the Caribbean. They provide workshops such as: creation of individual and community portable water filters, design and implementation of community solar systems among others. ISER Caribe is the umbrella organization of Eco Kit Puerto Rico. Casa Pueblo – Non-profit, a community self-management project that is committed to protecting natural, cultural and human resources. It was born in 1980 when the government of Puerto Rico wanted to start a mining operation in 17 deposits of silver, gold and copper. Mining would have caused an ecological and social catastrophe in 36,000 ropes of land in the municipalities of Adjuntas, Utuado, Lares and Jayuya. Casa Pueblo is providing solar lighting and sustainable resources to municipalities all over Puerto Rico. For more information please go to:

La Brigada Solidaria del Oeste - The Solidarity Brigade of the West -  is a self-managed community initiative comprised of a collective of various organizations that have joined together with the aim of providing essential resources to communities that have been gravely affected by the passing of Hurricane María. We visit communities on the west coast of Puerto Rico in order to identify and meet their needs with the support we have been receiving from committed individuals and groups in Puerto Rico and the diaspora.
